This small scale pavilion along the canal has two main purposes:
1) To solve a specific architectural program
2) Constitue an “orientation device” upon thelandscape through its geometry and massing.
The Promenade is a small-scale pavilion located on a natural island, filled with trees, in the Rideau Canal on Colonel By Drive near Landsdown Park in Ottawa. After analyzing the site, I came to the conclusion that the pavilion should be simple yet be a part of the island's experience. The entrance is a bridge that leads to a courtyard that has trees as part of the path. The courtyard is open so that it allows the freedom to walk around the island. Then the path continues to inside of the pavilion where there would be services such as: Kayak Rentals that opperates in the summer, a Cafe, accessible washroom, storage spaces on the balcony on the waterfront. The cafe is glazed so that it allows for great views. Then the path passes the edge of the island to serve as a balcony/dock. During the winter, people skating will access the island and the pavilion from a ramp that will be in place that season.
